Picture this: you’ve just put in four long years at a college, studying hard and sleeping maybe twice a week. Now the all-nighters and exams are finally behind you, because it’s GRADUATION DAY, BABY! But before you can clutch that super expensive piece of paper called a diploma, the Dean hands one out to an A-lister who’s been making bank and living like a rock star while you’ve spent the last few years eating Ramen and popcorn 24/7! Do you get a little annoyed, or are you pumped to hang with the likes of Diddy, John Legend, Jill Scott, or other famous faces? It’s probably a mix of both!
Colleges and universities are never shy about handing out honorary degrees to some of your favorite celebs, adding a little Hollywood glam to their graduation processions. This past May, a few more were added to the list!
Sean “Diddy” Combs recently received an honorary degree from Washington D.C.’s Howard University, where he had studied business for two years. Although he dropped out before graduating, that didn’t stop the prestigious HBCU from recognizing his contributions and awarding the music mogul his first degree. “Ain’t no homecoming like a Howard homecoming,” he cheered from the stage. “And it feels so good to be home.” He also served up a batch of Bad Boy wisdom in a stirring speech to the graduating class. “Nobody is going to invite you to the front of the line, you got to push your way to the front of the line.”
John Legend also recently returned to his alma mater, University of Pennsylvania, where he received an honorary Doctorate in Music, in addition to the current degree he already held in English. He was joined by his beautiful (and barefoot) wife Chrissy Teigen, who proudly Instagrammed photos of the big event. “The key to success, the key to happiness is to open your heart to love.” the All Of Me singer said in his speech. “Spending your time doing things you love and with people you love.”
Singer and songwriter Jill Scott also took it back to her hometown of Philadelphia to receive an honorary degree from Temple University for her contributions to the art and music field. The Philly native was “hooded” by none other than notable Temple alum, Bill Cosby.
Of course, let’s not forget producer and hip hop recording artist, Kasseem Dean (better known as Swizz Beatz), who’s earning a degree the old fashioned (and hard) way. Currently enrolled at Harvard Business School, the Bronx native has been Instagraming his journey on the Ivy League campus since moving in, including pictures of his decked out dorm room and studying with his classmates. We wish him well with a hearty “IT’S SHOWTIME!” in our best Swizzy voice.
